I am happy to see goat becoming more popular. However, I do think something's a bit amiss with the author's description of where goat is eaten. We ate goat fairly often in England (at ethnic restaurants, true, but that's just about the only place you can get good food in London, and it's also the only places the locals would eat). I didn't have it in Germany (although they did eat rabbit there), but my friends in Italy ate it. And all over Greece and in Czechoslovakia. Of course, if you decide that eastern and southern Europeans aren't sufficiently white (which would be, I believe, analogous to the US's immigration policy some time ago?), then perhaps that article's right.
Goat's eaten fairly often in Texas, but generally in the less-english-speaking Mexican restaurants. I ate it all summer -- when you only get one meal a week with some meat, goat's got more in it than chicken. Plus, Indian goats are great! They're remarkably happy animals (compared to the chickens, which are piled in cages that would make a PeTA activist clamour for American-style chicken farms). They have very pleasant faces and seem to enjoy bouncing in place. They roam about the streets at will, get in trouble for browsing at open-air grocery stores, eat everyone's leftovers, and bounce around gleefully on top of the occasionally-used trash cans (which are large concrete cylinders that sometimes get stuff put in them, then get picked over by beggars and goats, and then get set alight). There's not too much meat on them, and what is is served Indian-style -- like chickens, chopped up in evenly-sized pieces with no regard for cut or bone -- but it's got an excellent taste. Like duck thighs. And, the skinniness of Indian goats (compared to Texas goats, the only other ones I've been able to see lately) leads to my favorite sight: pregnant goats! If you're about four inches across, and you have twin kids inside of you pushing out about eight inches to each side with sharp corners, you look quite silly. I like it!
Goats: fun to watch, fun to eat!
