The Large Scary Classmate I mentioned last fall is now the Slim Slightly-Scary Classmate.
He must have lost a hundred pounds since fall; according to those who met with him when he was shopping for graduate schools, he must have lost at least two hundred in the past two years. He can now shop in regular-size off-the-rack stores, and he looks great.
What's his secret? Diet and exercise. He's very dedicated, constantly going to the gym or playing super-active sports (including, I believe, squash). And no fancy diets -- just eating healthy and having small healthy snacks to keep hunger from building up. I must confess I was skeptical when I first met him and he mentioned his goal of getting into Banana Republic's spring line of clothes, because of so many other huge people who give up after a week; oh ye of little faith, take notice of the power of a firm will.
I've lost thiry-five pounds since graduation. My secret? diet and exercise. No fancy diets, just Cooking Light and other healthy food, and first Krav Maga and now the less-knee-intensive and more stinky-guy-free Curves. I'm not as dedicated as the Scary Classmate, but I have much less far to go. Another fifteen and I'll be optimal. I've got the German genes -- the one time I dropped under that level, in 12th grade, I started to look gaunt; the redheaded Kid Sister, full of Irish genes, would start to look plump about ten pounds lighter (and two inches taller) than I would look gaunt. Genes are odd.
But yes: it's quite possible to be healthy and trim and fit without living on only oranges and mineral oil (which was method of the DuBarry Success Course in 1943 when my gorgeous grandmother (remind me to put up a picture of her!) took it), without liposuction, and without any other crazy and unmaintainable measures. It definitely helps to have a support group -- if you have an eating problem, just like if you have a drinking problem, having someone there to physically take the problem out of your hands may be what does it. (Having someone who does the opposite isn't good, though -- Bob tells me of a patient in hospital for something related to huge obesity; her family would bring in buckets of fried chicken for her and take off just the fried skin to feed to her. That's not a good support group.)
It can be done!
Stinky guys certainly gravitate to Krav Maga. ;-)

All of my life, how much weight I'm gaining (or losing) has oddly corrolated with how much I eat and how little I exercise. I say "odd" because I am told over and over again that I can't lose weight as long as I'm eating saturated fats or carbs or potato chips or fast food, and I'm told how much one eats doesn't matter but rather it only matters what you eat. One person at work told me that I was never going to lose weight as long as I kept eating beans because beans have more than the daily alotment of carbs on the Atkins programs. Then there's the age-old wisdom about fat being the root of all evil and another who believes that human misery (and obesity) is caused by gluten.
That's not to say that some diet programs (cutting more in certain areas) are not more conducive to weight loss than others (I've generally found that the better foods to cut are the ones that don't keep you full and make you eat more anyway), but I've nonetheless found volume (as measured by calories) to be the biggest indicator of how I'm doing weight-wise. Exercise has less measurement since I've never actually gotten on to an exercise program that I've stuck to for more than a month, but with any luck my exercise bike and Red Hill will help me with that.

Alex -- funny how that works, isn't it? That your weight goes up or down depending on a positive or negative difference between the amount of calories taken in and the amount of calories burned... it's almost like there's some law about conservation of matter and energy, or something!

Hope you are doing great on your weight loss still. I found your site because I searched "DuBarry Success Course". I am actually looking for this old vintage course that my mother and my older sisters used for facial beauty. You mentioned your lovely grandmother using said course. Would she perhaps, still have such course. If so, I would be curious as to how I might purchase said course from her. Thank you for your consideration.

I haven't been up to much lately. Eh. I just don't have anything to say right now. I've pretty much been doing nothing worth mentioning. That's how it is. I haven't gotten anything done.
