I hate Microsoft Word so much. I'd only use Word Perfect (where they understand that some users are -- gasp! -- intelligent enough to be able to wonder what the *&(^@$(*&^ is going on with the result of what should have been a very easy cut and paste, to pull up and understand the underlying formatting, and to delete and alter it until they get their desired outcome), except that nobody else has the capability to read Word Perfect documents and (for some unknown reason) Word Perfect documents saved as MSWord format, even if they show up fine when opened in MSWord on my computer, have a much greater chance of coming through email as nonsense than original MSWord documents created on my computer and then emailed (although even they often seem to be severely mauled in transmission).

I know everyone else has a hit on half the population of that part of Seattle already, so it wouldn't make a difference if I joined the boat, but that's the only reason I'm not. (Well, that, and not having found an email client, besides Outlook Express, that will do what I want -- that is, access multiple hotmail accounts -- although even that's being cut off for new users.)

I held on to WordPerfect through the dissertation, but finally gave it up after that and succumbed to Word.

I still can't make Word work like I could WP. Very sad.

I'm slowly migrating to OpenOffice. Same object-oriented formatting as Word, only real benefits being that (a) it's not Microsoft and (b) it's free.
